A few days before Valentine's Day we made this cute gum ball craft. In fact we made two, one for a Birthday Valentine for grandma and another for us to keep. I found directions on Pinterest. That same day my husband purchased Plastic Balloons from the dollar store, and we had so much fun blowing bubbles (that's what they looked like to me) and tossing them in the air.
Although they look like bubbles they are really balloons and as you can see at the bottom of the package it says, "Is not a gum. Do not chew or swallow." It was a fun activity, but I think adult help and supervision is required, but I suppose it really would depend on the age of your children.
Since we had so much fun, I thought why not have a bubblegum or bubble themed Read with Me Monday or Tasty Tuesday? So, that's what we did (Although the truth of the matter is I couldn't wait until Monday and so we moved Read with Me Monday to Saturday :) I started thinking and googling ideas for bubblegum. I found some recipes for bubblegum cupcakes and I knew I just had to try them. I found some bubblegum extract at the grocery store in the candy making aisle.
All you really need to do is add bubblegum flavoring (about 1 to 1 1/2 teaspoons) to your cupcake mix or frosting or you could add it to both the mix and the frosting (That's what I did.) However, there are different recipes (Most are pretty similar), but you may want to google bubblegum cupcakes to see what works best for you! I used gum balls to decorate the cupcakes! They tasted so yummy (At least I thought so.)

Okay One more thing...After all this post is titled Read with Me Monday, but I haven't mentioned anything about reading yet. When I began thinking about bubblegum ideas I remembered a poem handout from church about reading your scriptures while chewing bubblegum so I decided to use google to see if I could find the poem and sure enough I found it at http://www.christysclipart.com/sayings/html. I changed the poem a little to be just about reading. It goes like this... Reading is lots of fun...'specially while chewing bubble gum! Read and read while you chew, and when the flavor's gone...you're through! After making our cupcakes we each grabbed a piece of bubblegum and several books and started reading away. We even read Mr. Bubble Gum by William H. Hooks (There are other bubble gum books as well.) I also found some fun bubble gum poems at http://www.proteacher.or/a/45741_Bubble+Gum.html. My little guy wanted to keep reading long after the bubble gum flavor was gone!
Happy Reading!
